Webinar Recap: Q&A with Cat Ninja Author Matthew Cody

Katie FieldingLiteracy, Webinar Recap

Be An Author Month happens in March every year—a whole month dedicated to inspiring every student to embrace their creativity, articulate their thoughts, and harness the strength of their voice.

What a purr-fect day for a webinar! The energy was electric as students, educators, and book lovers gathered for an unforgettable Be An Author Live! webinar featuring none other than Matthew Cody, the mastermind behind Epic!’s wildly popular Cat Ninja series. Hosted by David Hotler from Book Creator and joined by Cherish Mims from Epic, the session brought together passionate readers and some very excited young interviewers for a behind-the-scenes look at how comics, creativity, and collaboration come to life.

Behind the mask of Cat Ninja

David introduced Cherish from Epic, who helps bring the magic of books into classrooms across the world. Cherish’s passion for literacy shone as she shared how Epic helps students build confidence as readers. She then introduced the man of the hour: Matthew Cody, who brought Cat Ninja to life and continues to expand the universe with spin-offs, science-themed adventures, and unforgettable characters.

Comics as a gateway to reading

One of the most powerful moments came when Matthew shared this secret: “I hated reading as a kid… until I discovered comics.”

That passion for visual storytelling stuck with him. With Cat Ninja, he set out to create something that had action, humor, and heart—something that could help today’s reluctant readers fall in love with books the way he did.

From cat superheroes to mad genius hamsters, his stories are layered with humor and emotional depth. Real-world issues like divorce are part of the narrative, helping kids feel seen while keeping them entertained.

Making comics: a team effort

Matthew explained how comics are a collaborative medium. He writes the script, but it’s the artists—like Chad Thomas—who bring it to life.

“It’s the best thing in the world when you see your words turned into art that’s even better than what you imagined.” said Cody.

He also recently worked with a writers’ room to co-create new Cat Ninja stories—because writing can be lonely, and collaboration makes the process more joyful.

Superstar student Q&A

David turned the spotlight on the real stars of the show—our incredible students! Class after class joined the live call to ask Matthew their most curious, creative, and downright hilarious questions. And wow, did they deliver!

A special shoutout to Ms. Schneider’s class, who fearlessly took the mic and kept the conversation lively with their thoughtful and entertaining questions. You made it unforgettable!

Watch the replay to hear Matthew answer fan-favorite questions like:

  • Why doesn’t Cat Ninja talk?
  • Why a hamster villain?
  • What inspired the name “Cat Ninja”?
  • Will there be more books?

Advice for Young Writers

In closing Matthew shared golden advice for students who want to write their own stories: “Read. Read. Read. That’s the best writing school there is.”

He encouraged students to collaborate, draw their own comics, and write what excites them. “Write for yourself, your teacher, your dog—just start.”
