Our Commitment to Accessibility

At Book Creator, accessibility isn’t an afterthought — it’s built into our design process. Guided by Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, we ensure all learners can create, share, and learn in ways that work best for them.

Our platform aligns to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, EN 301 549, and Revised Section 508. We proactively test new features with assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, Narrator, VoiceOver, TalkBack, ChromeVox) and gather feedback from educators to keep improving.

Note: Book Creator provides accessible authoring tools, but the accessibility of individual books depends on how they are created.

Technical Accessibility Details

All core functionality is fully operable via keyboard without requiring a mouse. The app has no keyboard traps, and keyboard shortcuts are active only when a component is in focus.

Compatible with accessibility features such as sticky keys, on-screen keyboards, and switch control devices.
Note: The pen tool requires a mouse, stylus, or touch screen input. However, students have multiple alternative ways to create and respond, such as typing, adding images with alt text, or recording audio.

Book Creator is optimized for use with leading screen readers:

All interactive elements have clear accessible labels, visible focus states, and meaningful sequence order to ensure logical navigation and comprehension. Book content can be read aloud using screen readers, with structure preserved for headings, links, and lists.

Speech-to-text can be a vital tool for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, or those who communicate more effectively by speaking.

In Book Creator online, speech-to-text is built in. Select the microphone icon in a text box to speak your content, and your words will appear in real time. Authors can choose from over 120 languages.
On iPads, use the device’s built-in dictation—tap the microphone on the keyboard once a text box is open.
Compatible with platform dictation tools, including macOS Dictation, ChromeOS Dictation, Windows Voice Typing, and Android Gboard voice input.
Does not require speech for operation—users can choose typing, drawing, or other multimodal inputs.
Supports browser zoom and screen reader output to assist in reviewing dictated content for accuracy.

Book Creator can automatically generates basic alternative text for user-created content (e.g., “Sofia’s science project, 3 pages, with diagrams and captions”). Authors can add or replace this with custom descriptions to provide more meaningful, context-specific detail.

AI-Powered Alt Text Generation

Select the image, open the inspector menu, and click the image icon in the Image Description field to auto-generate an editable description.
Authors can refine the AI-generated alt text before saving.
Saved alt text is read aloud by screen readers and preserved when books are exported in accessible formats.

Best Practices: Authors are encouraged to keep descriptions concise, relevant to the learning task, and free of unnecessary decorative detail unless it serves an instructional purpose.

Closed Captions: Authors can upload or embed captions in multiple languages for video content. Captions are synchronized for accurate playback.
Audio/Video Alternatives: Transcripts can be provided for audio-only content, and descriptions can be added for video content.
Works with auto-captioning tools from platforms like YouTube or Zoom, which can be edited for accuracy before publishing in Book Creator.
Embedded audio and video can be paused, replayed, and volume-adjusted by learners.

Authors can add custom voice instructions, labels, and annotations to any page or element in a book, providing personalized guidance and multimodal feedback.

Recordings can be automatically transcribed for accessibility, with transcripts available for translation into multiple languages.
Annotations are accessible via screen readers and can be navigated using a keyboard, touchscreen, or alternative input device.
Supports language learning, differentiated instruction, and UDL by enabling audio prompts alongside visual or written instructions.
Best Practices: Use clear, descriptive language, and keep instructions concise to ensure accurate transcription and translation.
