Discover how a spark of inspiration led to a dynamic badge-based learning system that empowers upper elementary students through creativity, independence, and the power of Book Creator.

I teach Elementary Design at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, where I am now in my second year of employment. Three years ago, during my first visit to ACS, I observed a Middle School Design class using a badge-based system. Students were fully immersed in projects like 3D design, songwriting, robotics, and microcontrollers. The room buzzed with energy and passion—it was truly inspiring!
That experience sparked my desire to create a similar program for upper elementary students—one that encourages independence, creativity, and self-motivation.

Why self-directed learning?

As an educator, I’ve always been passionate about inquiry-based, student-centered learning. At ACS Abu Dhabi, self-directed learning is a core approach, and I wanted to empower my students to take ownership of their learning.

With just 40 minutes per week for each lesson, I needed a system that maximized learning time while giving students choice and flexibility. I also wanted to find a way to talk less so students could spend more time actively learning. Badges became the perfect solution!

Self-directed learning:
✅ Encourages independence
✅ Develops problem-solving skills
✅ Allows students to explore topics at their own pace

The classroom has a playful Super Mario-themed wall mural, featuring pixelated characters like Mario, Bowser, Goombas, coins, and question blocks. A large screen is mounted on the wall, and various classroom supplies and storage bins are neatly arranged. Natural light pours in from large windows, creating an inviting learning environment.

Setting up a system to keep students engaged and on track

1. Start Small

Begin with simple tasks to introduce students to self-directed learning. I guide the whole class through the first badge, modeling the process before letting them work independently. This helps them understand expectations and build confidence.

2. Guide, Don’t Solve

Resist the urge to give students the answers! Instead, encourage them to troubleshoot and make their own decisions. This fosters resilience, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. I embed short video tutorials inside the badge journals to help guide students with skill development.

3. Create a Routine

Consistency is key. A predictable structure—such as starting each session with a quick goal-setting activity—helps students stay focused and organized.

4. Let Them Choose

Students should select their own badges based on their interests. This autonomy keeps them motivated and invested in their learning. Just remind them to commit to their choices to build persistence and follow-through.

5. Set Clear Goals

Break tasks into manageable steps. Encourage students to set small, achievable goals at the start of each session to maintain momentum and track progress.

6. Celebrate Success

Recognition keeps students motivated! Celebrate achievements—big or small—whether it’s completing a badge, finishing a prototype, or making steady progress. In my class, students earn custom vinyl stickers when they complete a badge.

7. Encourage Sharing

Reflection and peer discussions help students articulate their learning, recognize challenges, and support each other. Sharing experiences reinforces understanding and builds a collaborative learning environment.

Track progress with Book Creator

Book Creator streamlines student progress tracking, cohort management, and personalized feedback—all in one place. The built-in motivation stickers keep students engaged, and badge book templates can be easily shared and assigned for individual use.

Each row displays a student’s name (blurred for privacy), an "Author" label in a yellow badge, and thumbnail covers of their badge journals. The book covers are colorful and showcase various badge designs in green frames, indicating different completed tasks or projects. To the right of each row is an “Actions” dropdown menu. This dashboard provides an organized view of student progress in a badge-based learning system.

Book Creator makes it effortless to:
📌 Monitor progress for each class. I can easily manage over 100 students per grade with a clear thumbnail view of each student’s book on the library page.
📌 Provide real-time feedback by leaving notes that guide student learning.
📌 Keep journals organized and accessible, allowing me to send updated pages instantly, ensuring a seamless learning experience.

Empowering student learning, one badge at a time

Implementing a self-directed badge system in the classroom empowers students to take charge of their learning, build independence, and stay engaged in meaningful projects. By starting small, fostering routines, and providing opportunities for choice, goal-setting, and reflection, we can create an environment where students thrive. Tools like Book Creator make tracking progress and offering feedback seamless, ensuring that each student gets the support they need.

Every classroom is different, and adapting these strategies to fit your students' needs is key. Have you tried self-directed learning or badging in your classroom? What strategies have worked for you? Let’s continue the conversation! Below is a free book that I’ve written on the badge program as well as two badge journals which you can remix to suit your own classroom.
