Learn about Book Creator's strengthened privacy commitment, including SOC 2 compliance and enhanced data security following the Kami acquisition.

Back in December 2021, we shared an in-depth look at our approach to privacy and security at Book Creator. We explained our “Private by Design” philosophy and our commitment to protecting the data of our amazing community of educators and students.

Today, we’re excited to share an update on our continued journey to provide you with a safe and secure platform you can trust.

A new chapter with Kami

You may have heard that Book Creator has been acquired by Kami. We’re incredibly excited about this new partnership, which brings together two companies dedicated to empowering educators and students.

This new chapter will only strengthen our commitment to you. With the support of Kami, we now have access to more dedicated and experienced people in our security and compliance teams. This allows us to invest more in the systems and processes that keep your data safe, ensuring that we can continue to meet and exceed the highest standards of security and privacy.

Achieving SOC 2 Certification: A New Milestone in Security

We are proud to announce that Book Creator has achieved SOC 2 certification. This is a significant milestone that demonstrates our deep commitment to the highest standards of data security.

What is SOC 2?

Developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), SOC 2 is a rigorous auditing procedure that ensures service providers securely manage your data to protect the interests of your organization and the privacy of your users. The certification is based on five “trust service principles”:

  • Security: Protecting your data against unauthorized access.
  • Availability: Ensuring Book Creator is available when you need it.
  • Processing Integrity: Ensuring that we process your data completely, accurately, and in accordance with your instructions.
  • Confidentiality: Protecting your confidential information.
  • Privacy: Safeguarding the personal information that you add to your books and store in your account.

Achieving SOC 2 certification means that we have undergone a thorough, independent audit of our systems and processes, and have been verified to have the necessary controls in place to keep your data safe. Please reach out to your Teacher Success Manager if you would like to see a copy of the report.

Continuously validating our practices

The world of data privacy is constantly evolving, and so are we. To ensure our practices remain best-in-class, we have partnered with Common Sense Privacy.

This collaboration allows us to continuously validate our privacy policies and practices against the latest standards and respond proactively to changes in legislation. Working with an independent organization like Common Sense Privacy helps us ensure that we are always providing the trusted and transparent service that parents, teachers, and schools expect.

A stronger, clearer privacy policy

Working with Common Sense Privacy, we have updated our App Privacy Policy to provide even stronger protections and greater clarity on how we handle your data. Our updated policy:

  • Clearly defines the types of data we collect and our roles as a data controller and processor.
  • Reaffirms our commitment to never sell your data or use it for advertising or marketing purposes.
  • Strengthens our compliance with global privacy regulations, including GDPR and FERPA.

We have worked hard to ensure this policy is written in plain english but we have also published a simplified Children’s Privacy Notice for a younger audience. We encourage you to read the full policy to understand the protections we have in place for you and your students.

An update on EU data hosting

In our 2021 article, we mentioned our intention to offer a version of Book Creator that stores and processes data exclusively within the European Union. We have continued to investigate this possibility, but unfortunately, it is still not a viable option.

The primary reason for this is that Google Cloud’s sovereign cloud offering in the EU is still missing some of the key services that Book Creator relies on to function. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, we remain committed to protecting the data of our EU customers through an updated Data Protection Agreement and our adherence to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Our commitment to you

Our "Private by Design" philosophy remains at the core of everything we do. We believe that your trust is our most valuable asset, and we are dedicated to earning it every day.

Thank you for being a part of the Book Creator community. We are excited to continue this journey with you, and we will always be transparent about how we are working to protect your data and privacy.
