Introduction

We are Tools for Schools, and we run Book Creator. To do this, we need to collect and use information. This page tells you how we collect, use, maintain, protect, and disclose your information. Please read it carefully, and if there’s anything you don’t understand, speak to an adult before you use Book Creator.

What personal information do we collect?

Personal information means any information about you, your life or your family.

Personal information will be Account Information or User Content.

Account Information is personal information that we collect to set up and manage your account. We also collect information:

  • information about your device and how you use Book Creator, which helps us to improve our services.
  • your estimated location, which helps us understand how people are using Book Creator, and personalize our service.
  • information about things that might go wrong occasionally with Book Creator, which helps us to keep Book Creator secure and prevent those things from happening again.

We decide how and why we collect and use your Account Information and we are legally responsible for the use of your Account Information.

User Content is your, or anyone else’s, content that you put into a book.

When collecting User Content, your school, district or teacher decides how and why the User Content should be used and is responsible for getting any consent which might be required for the use of the User Content. We only use User Content for the reasons decided by your school, district or teacher – we don’t do anything else with it or use it for our own purposes.

How do we collect personal information?

We collect personal information you provide to us.

We’ll only collect the information that we need to run and manage Book Creator.

Sometimes you might want to upload information about other people to Book Creator as part of the content you create, for example, a photo or audio recording of someone else. Please do not do this unless you have that person's consent (or their parent's or guardian's consent).

Sometimes we might be given information about you by someone else who is using Book Creator. For example, someone might upload a photo of you to one of their books. That person should make sure that you don't mind them doing this.

Your teachers can see all the content that you create.

A teacher may choose to publish content or allow you in their libraries to publish content. We may review any content that gets published.

How do we use your information?

We will only use your personal information if we are allowed to do so under data protection law.

So that you can use Book Creator, we use your information to:

  • provide Book Creator and make sure you can use it;
  • manage your account;
  • respond to any questions or complaints you have; and
  • send you occasional communications to help you get the most out of Book Creator.

We’ll also use some of your information to make sure that Book Creator is used properly, and help us improve Book Creator. If you enter a competition or giveaway, we’ll use your information to run that competition and contact you if we need to.

We do not

  • use or share your information for any type of advertising;
  • build a personal profile of you other than for supporting agreed educational or school purposes, or as agreed by you (or by a parent or guardian if necessary); or
  • collect information for the purpose of tracking you outside Book Creator or allow other people or organizations to do so.

How do we share your information?

Sometimes we need to share your information with other companies. We will only do this if:

  • the other company provides services to us;
  • we have to disclose the information to comply with laws; or
  • another company buys our company, in which case we’ll tell you that this is going to happen. If you don’t want us to share your information with the other company, you can tell us not to, but it’s important that you tell us this within 30 days after we’ve told you this is going to happen.

Other people might be able to see your name and book content that you create, if they are invited to view the books. It is your teacher's responsibility to invite people to view books. People will be invited by a private link so the information cannot be viewed publicly unless you or your teacher choose to make it public. Your teacher can remove published books at any time.

We do not:

  • sell or rent your information;
  • share your information with anyone else for research and/or product improvement; or
  • share your information with anyone else for marketing purposes.

Your choices

You can control how your information is shown to others, and you can control and restrict access to your information. For example, you can choose a limited audience for books you create or only enable collaboration with a limited audience.

Your privacy rights

You have certain rights over your personal information, including:

  • Access: You can ask us for a copy of the personal information that we have collected about you, or your parent or guardian can ask for a copy of your information by contacting your school or district.
  • Correction: You can ask us to correct personal information that we hold about you if it isn’t right.
  • Deletion: You can ask us to delete your personal information.
  • Restriction: This means that we will only store your personal information and not do anything further with it.
  • Objection: You ask us to stop using your personal information. This only applies sometimes, and we don’t always have to stop using your personal information.
  • Opt out of direct marketing: You can tell us that you don’t want us to send you any direct marketing.

If you would like to use any of these rights, you can either email us directly or ask your parent, guardian or teacher to email us at [email protected].

Deleting your information

Usually, we will only keep your information for as long as your account is open, and you can ask us to delete your account and all of your personal information at any time.

We might delete any of your books and information if you haven't used your account for over 12 months. We’ll tell you before we do this. You can download books at any stage, so if you don’t want to lose that content, you should make sure you download it.

Changes to this privacy policy

We might change this policy. If it changes, we’ll update the policy, and we’ll tell you about any large changes.
